Although our prolonged social distancing campaigns may have eroded some interpersonal communication skills, I’m pretty sure we can all relate to those hot-button issues to avoid in conversations. This could be politics or another topic that carries a comparably passionate point of view. Well, if you ever run into the folks at CrossWater, I’d avoid discussing bridges. Read their website. I’m not kidding.

Regardless of the millennial-ese terminology, the concept of the CrossWater taxi could offer a unique solution to traversing waterways. CrossWater describes their electric marine vehicles as horizontal elevators. Using roof-mounted solar panels to recharge their batteries, the autonomous, climate-controlled taxis could make marine travel easier and cleaner. Able to transport 15 people at once, the taxis run at a cruising speed of about 10 knots and go up to 400 miles on a single charge.

The company also touts their vehicles as 10 times faster than walking a bridge, what with their “dotted lines leaving no doubt that they are for cars, trucks, and motorcycles, not for pedestrians.” The taxis are also expected to cost about $100,000 each, whereas bridges can run into the millions of dollars.

The inside of the taxis will also provide touch screen displays and premium audio systems that could provide local information.

On the safety side, CrossWater states that “each taxi will feature advanced wind and current cancellation technology,” and that each pod is completely sealed and waterproof. The site doesn’t offer a lot of clarity on how you cancel waves and current.

However, the company states that if there is an emergency, the AI that steers the unit will automatically generate more oxygen to protect passengers and rapidly transport them back to the nearest bank.

According to their site, the company has raised over $1 million in support of its concept, which they hope to have in action by September 2022.
